Dec 8th 2009 REDWOOD STREAKS AHEAD WITH ITS SCRUMMY VEGGIE RASHERS

A delicious veggie ‘bacon’ produced by Heather Mills’ pioneering vegan food company has been named ‘Best Meat Replacement’ by the UK’s only monthly vegetarian cookery magazine.

Cook Vegetarian! awarded The Redwood Wholefood Company the accolade in its first-ever Veggie Awards, which ‘celebrate flavour, versatility and innovation in the world of meat-free dining’.

After tasting meat replacements from companies such as Quorn, Cauldron, Releat and Fry’s, Cook Vegetarian! named Redwood’s veggie bacon as the top performer.

In their summing up, the judges wrote: “So many lapsed veggies list bacon as their no. 1 downfall – but maybe if they’d scheduled in a few BLTs using these scrummy rashers they’d still be eating meat-free!”

Also coming in for praise in The Veggie Awards 2010 was Redwood’s Mozzarella Style Cheezly, which is free from dairy, lactose and casein. This was highly commended in the ‘Best Dairy-Free’ category.

“If you want to add a convincing cheesy flavour to pizzas and similar dishes that call for grated mozzarella, you can’t go without this version,” wrote the judges.

“It magically takes on the taste of mozzarella when cooked and melts appealingly over dishes. Your dairy eating mates won’t know the difference.”

The veggie bacon and dairy-free mozzarella are among more than 50 different 100% natural, plant-based foods produced by Redwood, which was recently rated the UK’s most ethical vegetarian foods supplier for the fourth year running.

Earlier this year, the company was bought by Heather Mills, who described her acquisition as “a dream come true.”

Among the many innovative foods produced by the company under the Vegideli, Cheatin’ and Cheezly brands are amazingly realistic Cheatin’ ‘meats’ in ‘bacon’, ‘chicken’, ‘ham’ and ‘beef’ varieties as well as turkey and beef style ‘roasts’, perfect for Christmas.

Also available are pâtés, gourmet burgers, ready-to-eat sausages, fish-style fingers and dairy-free ‘cheeses’, including Cheezly with Cranberries – ideal for cheering up the Christmas cheeseboard.

Because everything in its range is free from animal ingredients and derivatives as well as cholesterol, artificial colours/preservatives, lactose, hydrogenated fats and GMOs, Redwood foods are ideal for vegetarians, vegans, people suffering from lactose intolerance and anyone looking for a healthier and more ethical lifestyle.
